A small, family-owned Italian restaurant where the pasta, the sauces and the dough are all made in house — and where the bread is free and abundant.
Bar Italia was built by ‘Naz’ Tozzo, who spent a quarter of a century turning a modest Court Street storefront into one of Thunder Bay’s most loyal dining rooms. Regulars still come for the same plates they ordered twenty years ago.
When her father became ill, his oldest daughter Laura Tozzo left university at 21 to keep the restaurant running. He passed away in 2013, and Laura has carried the kitchen forward ever since — overseeing a staff of 13, taking orders and cooking herself.
The food is unapologetically traditional: pasta and sauces from scratch, veal and chicken parmigiana, hand-stretched pizza dough, fresh handmade cocktails, and espresso. Guests describe the room as small, busy and warm — “an authentic Italian feel” a few blocks from downtown Fort William.
