The City of Thunder Bay is inviting residents to provide input on the future of the Central Avenue Development Lands, a 40-hectare (100-acre) area between Golf Links Road and Balmoral Street that is being prepared for residential development and economic growth.
With new infrastructure investments supported by significant provincial funding, the city is positioning these lands to address the ongoing housing crisis. The project supports Thunder Bay’s goal of adding 2,200 new homes by 2031, delivering a mix of housing options that includes missing middle and multi-unit developments. City planners say this approach will increase affordability and create a more diverse housing market that meets the needs of current and future residents.
Residents can learn more about this project and fill out a survey at thunderbay.ca/getinvolved. The survey will be available through end of day on June 19. Paper copies are available at City Hall and branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library. Display materials from the Public Open House held on May 27 remain available outside the City’s One Stop Development Shop at the Victoriaville Civic Centre, including a “Create your own Development Plan” activity.
The information collected through the survey, the interactive planning activity, and the Public Open House will be used to refine and prepare a Preferred Development Plan. That plan will be presented at a second Public Open House for additional feedback before being presented to City Council for final consideration.
“Thunder Bay is growing, and so is the demand for housing,” city officials stated. The Central Avenue Development Lands project represents a significant step toward meeting that demand while creating opportunities for economic development along one of the city’s key corridors.
