Thunder Bay, ON — The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has officially relaunched its low-cost spay and neuter clinic at the Northwest Animal Centre in Thunder Bay, bringing affordable veterinary care back to pet owners in Northwestern Ontario after a nearly two-year hiatus.
The clinic, located at 1535 Rosslyn Road, provides high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs, helping reduce pet overpopulation and making essential veterinary care more accessible to families across the region. The return of the service has been welcomed by local animal rescue organizations and pet owners who have faced limited affordable options in recent years.
The long-awaited reopening was made possible after Dr. Cheryl Chuljian recently relocated to Thunder Bay from California, bringing the expertise needed to staff the clinic. New appointment slots open every Monday at 6:00 p.m. through the Ontario SPCA website, and demand has been high since the soft launch.
This clinic is a game-changer for Thunder Bay pet owners. Access to affordable spay and neuter services means fewer unwanted litters, healthier pets, and less strain on local animal rescue organizations.
The Ontario SPCA Northwest Veterinary Clinic offers a range of services beyond spay and neuter surgeries, including wellness exams, core and booster vaccinations, microchipping, and basic veterinary care. The clinic is open to the general public as well as those who receive government subsidies, hold an Indigenous status card, are referred through social services, or do not currently have a relationship with a local veterinarian.
Services are available at significantly reduced rates compared to standard veterinary clinics. The Ontario SPCA recommends that pets be vaccinated at least two weeks prior to spay or neuter surgery. For animals that have been vaccinated previously, proof of vaccination is requested at the time of the appointment. Vaccinations can also be administered at the time of surgery if needed.
The Thunder Bay clinic is one of five high-volume spay and neuter clinics operated by the Ontario SPCA across the province, with additional locations in Sudbury, Barrie, York Region, and Durham. The charity has performed over 85,000 spay and neuter surgeries to date, making a significant impact on pet overpopulation across Ontario.
