Thunder Bay, ON — The Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) has been allocated $39 million from the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund to support northern Ontario communities in building, repairing and upgrading community facilities.
Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu made the announcement at the Canada Games Complex in Thunder Bay on Tuesday. The facility was cited as an example of the type of older infrastructure that could benefit from the program. “This is a building that many residents of Thunder Bay rely on for recreation, for citizens connection, for classes and just in general, it’s a very essential piece of infrastructure to our local residents,” Hajdu advised during the announcement.
The $39 million Area Impact stream will be rolled out over a four-year period. Organizations across Northwestern Ontario will be able to apply for financial support to restore or retain notable infrastructure in their communities. Hajdu noted that many buildings in the region were constructed around the same time and are now showing their age.
The fund is intended to facilitate keep these facilities functional and available for public use. Eligible organizations can apply online through FedNor, which will work with applicants to understand their undertaking plans, timelines, and specific needs. The application intake process is now open for communities across Northwestern Ontario.
