News from Thunder Bay: The Lakehead Police Service is extending a pilot program aimed at addressing downtown safety concerns.
Undertaking Support, introduced April 20, consists of an officer paired with a social navigator who conduct foot patrols in the municipality north and south cores. The goal is to connect people to social services rather than lay criminal charges against them. The team recorded nearly 1,500 the public interactions between April 20 and the end of May, as well as 113 referrals to local residents resources.
Nearly half of those who received referrals connected with social services, such as housing, addictions and mental health support. The campaign, which was initially earmarked for 60 days, has been extended until Sept. 1, after which the service will conduct a formal evaluation. Undertaking Support was prompted by concerns from citizens members and business owners about downtown safety incidents such as public drug use, vandalism and disorderly conduct.
