ALCOHOL POLICY UPDATE APPROVED
Council unanimously approved updates to the city Municipal Alcohol Policy, which serves as the guideline for alcohol service at events on municipal property including parks and recreation facilities. The policy, originally established in 2000 with previous updates in 2021, will now accommodate the upcoming Tbaytel Multiplex indoor turf facility opening in 2026.
The revised policy will allow adult tournaments and community events to have alcohol service options, though strict regulations remain in place. Alcohol will not be permitted during youth sporting events, and all events must still obtain proper Special Occasion Permits from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
PUBLIC TRANSIT DISCUSSIONS
Thunder Bay Transit officials presented concerns about maintaining full service levels due to driver shortages. The system aims to deliver approximately 99 percent of scheduled trips, though last year the actual number fell to around 96 percent due to vacancies, sick leave, and training requirements.
A proposal to introduce temporary service adjustments starting May 10 was ultimately rejected by council in a 7-4 vote. The plan would have reduced approximately 6,900 hours of service between May and August.
RECYCLING PROGRAM CHANGES
Starting in 2026, the recycling program will undergo changes as Circular Materials, the organization managing the provincial system, will operate only one recycling depot in Thunder Bay instead of the current three locations. The Walsh Street depot will continue operating, with the city managing the site on behalf of the provincial system.
