City of Thunder Bay staff are actively assessing public feedback on six locations being considered for designated encampment sites, following a series of community drop-in sessions held across the city. The six sites under consideration include Current River Park on Cumberland Street, Freedom Park next to Prince Arthur’s Landing, the park space next to the bridge on Island Drive, Cam River Heritage Park, a vacant lot between North McKela and North Vicar Streets, and the existing encampment area on Simpson Street. The plan aims to establish up to three designated sites — one in the north core, one in the south core, and possibly a third outside the urban cores. The city says it is consulting with community partners, Indigenous leaders, and people with lived experience before bringing final recommendations to council. The guiding criteria include emergency vehicle access, year-round operability, and proximity to outreach services. The enhanced encampment response action plan includes approximately 10 coordinated actions designed to address homelessness and improve safety across Thunder Bay.
