Former Tbaytel CEO Peter Diedrich has officially filed his nomination papers to run for mayor of Thunder Bay, entering the municipal election race with a platform focused on government efficiency, economic growth, public safety, and accountability.
Diedrich, who previously served as the head of Thunder Bay’s municipal telecommunications utility, unveiled his vision for the city this week, promising a “faster, more transparent, and more ambitious” city government. His campaign emphasizes bold action on public safety, downtown revitalization, and economic development.
“Imagine a city where people again feel safe walking downtown and in their own neighbourhoods,” Diedrich said in his campaign announcement. “Imagine a city where those struggling with homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges are not left behind. Imagine a city where new businesses are created, grow, and create better jobs and careers.”
The mayoral candidate outlined key priorities including streamlining city bureaucracy to make Thunder Bay more business-friendly, strengthening partnerships with Lakehead University and Confederation College to retain graduates, and creating an integrated system for addressing homelessness and addiction.
“We will promote Thunder Bay as a destination for outdoor living, remote work, and affordability. Thunder Bay has the raw ingredients to become one of the most attractive mid-sized cities in Canada.”
Diedrich committed to setting clear milestones with 100-day, six-month, one-year, and five-year goals, promising regular progress reports to taxpayers. His campaign comes at a time when Thunder Bay voters are increasingly focused on municipal leadership and accountability.
