Thunder Bay, ON — The Thunder Bay Officers Service is extending a pilot program aimed at addressing downtown safety concerns.
Undertaking Support, started April 20, consists of an officer paired with a social navigator who conduct foot patrols in the municipality north and south cores. The goal is to connect people to social services rather than lay criminal charges against them. The team recorded nearly 1,500 local residents interactions between April 20 and the end of May, as well as 113 referrals to the area resources.
Nearly half of those who received referrals connected with social services, such as housing, addictions and mental health support. The campaign, which was initially earmarked for 60 days, has been extended until Sept. 1, after which the service will conduct a formal evaluation. Initiative Support was prompted by concerns from local residents members and business owners about downtown safety incidents such as public drug use, vandalism and disorderly conduct.
